AMC Beginner’s Ice Climbing Outing – Ouray, CO

Take a break from the rock to swing tools and hook ice at the Ouray Ice Park, Ouray CO. March 8-11, 2019. Carpool on Friday, climb Saturday and Sunday, carpool back Monday. Awesome top rope ice climbing on South Park and Schoolroom ice park walls. No lead climbing, no backcountry. This is an AMC outing: Participants must have taken AMC Basic Outdoor Rock School or equivalent. You must be a current Arizona Mountaineering Club member in good standing (dues paid for 2019). Prerequisite: Leader Approval. Space is limited to 4 climbers. Preference given to new beginner ice climbers. Why? Because the world needs more ice climbers! If you’ve previously gone ice climbing take your buddies ice climbing and please leave space for the newbies. Participants may share transportation and lodging costs in Ouray. Participants are responsible for all meals, lodging, and incidentals. You get to ice climb in the “little Switzerland” of the Rocky Mountains. Your fabulous outing leader will show you standard ice climbing equipment and its use, proper technique (body positioning, footwork, tool placement), and belaying and rappelling for ice climbers. Participants to provide helmet, harness, belay/rappel device, personal anchors, cold weather clothing/gear, and crampon compatible mountaineering boots (NOT hiking boots). Boots are available for rent from Ouray Mountain Sports or San Juan Mt. Guides, limited supplies. AMC ice tools and alpine crampons are provided. A complete gear list, suggested lodging, and lots of gratuitous advice will be provided to participants. Optional (not part of the AMC Outing) Ski day at Telluride, on Monday, March 11.
