Climb Chimera (5.9) on Camelback Mountain.

“Chimera” ( https://www.mountainproject.com/v/chimera/107397849 ) is a 5.9 3 pitch (two pitches listed on mountain project plus one pitch to ascend to the base of the climb) sport climb on Camelback Mountain. It has spectacular views and good exposure… So be ready for an adventure. This is an intermediate outing and you must be comfortable climbing 5.9 outside or at least 5.10 in the gym.

Who: 5 climbers total plus 2 outing leaders. All climbers interested in joining this meetup will be placed on the waitlist until your membership status and experience level has been approved. You must be a current dues paying member of the AMC to attend this meet up.

When: Friday December 8th 2017.

Where: Meet at the Echo Canyon trailhead at 10:00.

Approach: The approach to the climb is short but strenuous with some loose gravel. Bring comfortable shoes. Wearing flip flops or sandals is not advised. The start of the climb is off of the main hiking trail but IS easily accessible to hikers. You have the option of leaving your bag at the base of the first pitch or taking it with you to the top of the first. There you’ll be able to stash it where it will be safe. If you leave your bag at the base of the first it will most likely be safe but security is not guaranteed. I highly recommend taking any valuables with you or locking them in your car.

Gear: Bring all personal climbing gear including helmet, harness, shoes, carabiners, prussiks/cordage, and personal anchor. In addition you might want a windbreaker, and/or layers as well as water and snacks. Chimera is face climbing and bringing a summit bag is reasonable. Once we’ve ascended Chimera we have a short walk and rappel to return to our belongings. I like to bring my regular shoes with me for the descent but this one’s short enough that you can walk it in your climbing shoes should you not want to bring approach shoes on the climb.

Please cancel early, if needed, giving other members the opportunity to sign up.

Disclaimer: The outing leaders take your safety seriously and will do everything possible to ensure a safe and fun outing. However, in joining this meet up you you acknowledge that the activity of outdoor rock climbing is inherently dangerous. This is not a guided outing and you are expected to be a member of the climbing team. This includes knowing your knots, rope work, climbing communication, safe belay practices, and your physical abilities.
