Self rescue skills Class

• What we’ll do
“Climbing is an inherently dangerous sport.”

We’ve all heard this many times because it’s true. Part of mitigating that danger involves smart planning and prevention: Wear your helmet. Always do a partner safety check. Watch and plan for inclement weather or the possibility of an emergency bivy. But what do you do if, despite plans, things go south? In this class we’ll focus on a few common emergency scenarios that a climber might encounter. We teach and practice what to do in such situations and how to safely mitigate them. All of the skills build on a foundation of “going to baseline.” We’ll teach you what that is and how to use it. Skills include: Going to “baseline”, escaping the belay (to go for help), providing an emergency lower from a top belay position, and tandem rappel. This will be a hands-on class. No climbing is required. All skill levels are welcome. The morning will be spent learning and reviewing basic self rescue skills. In the afternoon we’ll test your skills with “emergency practice.” Depending on location, skills practice may be “high angle.” We will implement safety top ropes for everyone so that skills can be practiced safely with minimal risk. Instructors:
Outing leaders: Chris Adams, David Anderson, John Sasso
