Slab/ footwork technique practice session

IMPORTANT NOTE: Due to the current closure at Tom’s Thumb trailhead we’ll be moving this meetup to pinnacle peak. We’ll still meet at 10am!

There are 10 climber spots available for this outing. Everyone will be sent to the waitlist prior to approval.

What is this meetup?
Come spend an afternoon practicing climbing footwork and technique. Climbing is a skill sport. Improvement comes through developing efficient and precise technique. The better your footwork, the more weight you can take off your fingers and the better you can climb. My goal for this session is to mindfully explore concepts and put those concepts into practice to grow climbing skill. I want you to walk away form this class with a better idea of how to move on the rock.

Who is this outing for?
This outing will be excellent for individuals just beginning to explore the sport of climbing and the world of climbing movement. Intermediate climbers may also find benefit as they refine and focus on technique in a laid back, no stress environment. Climbing grade will range from 5.6-5.8.

Where is the outing?
We’ll meet at the Tom’s thumb trailhead and then head out to the half and half wall.

What’s the approach like?
The approach will be about 30-40 minutes and is moderate difficulty with some short steep ascents and loose gravel.

What climbing gear should I bring?
All personal safety equipment for climbing including harness, personal anchor, helmet, belay/rappel device, autoblock
Moderate or non-aggressive climbing shoes (aggressive, downturned shoes won’t be as effective as a moderate shoe)
At least 3 locking carabiners
Double length sling
The AMC will provide all climbing ropes and anchor materials

What other gear should I bring?
Snacks/lunch and water
Appropriate layers to stay warm or cool (depending on weather)
A notebook and pen (if you want to take notes)

What skills do I need to know before attending?
Safely belaying a top rope climber
Rappelling off a double strand rope
Basic knots

This is an official AMC event and is open to any members who have paid dues for 2019. All individuals RSVP’ing will be sent to the waitlist until membership is confirmed.

By signing up for this event you accept that climbing is inherently dangerous and that you are a member of a climbing team. Your safety, and the safety of your team, is in your hands.
