Top Roping and camping at Isolation Canyon

NOTE: MEETING LOCATION HAS CHANGED. SEE BELOW.

Come enjoy a day of climbing at one of Arizona’s hidden gems. Isolation canyon is a beautiful, remote, quartzite canyon located only a moderate 45 minute hike from Pine Arizona. We’ll be setting up several routes between 5.6 and 5.11 with most of the routes falling in the 5.9 to 5.10 range. After a full day of climbing we’ll regroup at a campsite not far from the trailhead where we’ll camp and enjoy a beautiful evening beneath the stars and pines.

The crag is sunny and warm in the morning and shady in the afternoon. Please be sure to bring sun protection and appropriate layers.

Your Outing Leaders for this event: Chris Adams and David Sampson

This outing has 12 climber spots available and is open to all AMC members who are current with their dues. You must be an AMC member to attend this outing. All participants will be sent to the waitlist until membership is confirmed.

PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT WE ARE ABLE TO CONTACT YOU THROUGH THE MEETUP SITE. IF YOU HAVE YOUR MESSAGES SET SO THAT YOU CAN’T BE CONTACTED, AND WE CAN’T COMMUNICATE WITH YOU, YOU WILL BE MOVED TO “NOT GOING”.

When: Meet at old country road (approximately 2 hours from Mesa and 2.9 miles past the Tonto national bridge turnoff) by 8:00am – Hiking into the canyon by 8:15.

Where: 34°22’03.1″N 111°26’23.4″W
We’re meeting at a large dirt area at a turn off, on the west side of Highway 87 just before the pine trailhead. The turnoff is located 2.9 miles past the Tonto national bridge turnoff. If you get to the pine trailhead turn around and head back the way you came, taking a right on the dirt road about 100m back.

You’ll pass a cattle guard and two forest service cisterns. We’ll be meeting in the large dirt lot just past that. From there we’ll caravan to the campsite. Ordinary passenger cars should be fine on the dirt road!

The Approach: is about one mile but involves hiking both up and down steep and rocky terrain. You must be comfortable with moderate intensity hiking and may be required to carry gear (ropes, carabiners, webbing) while doing so. There is a “last chance” pit toilet at the trailhead. If you plan on using the restroom at the climbing area please be prepared to pack out any waste.

Climbing Gear: Helmet, Harness, climbing shoes, and belay device are a must.

Skills Needed: Climbing calls, basic knots, basic safety procedures, belay technique.

Other gear needed: Good hiking shoes (no flip flops), at least 2 liters of water, food and snacks, and all the gear you’d need for camping.

Camping: We’ll be “car camping” so there’s no need to pack light or carry everything with you. Unless restrictions are in place there will be a fire so firewood is appreciated.

The camping will be located a short drive (less than 5 minutes) from the trailhead.

Also note that CAMPING IS NOT REQUIRED TO ATTEND THIS OUTING. Individuals are welcome to come for the climbing and head home to the valley if they choose.

Disclaimer: Climbing is an inherently dangerous activity. You are expected to be a functioning member of the climbing team.

If you sign up, and need to cancel please try to do so as soon as possible to give someone else a chance to attend.
