2018 Grand Canyon Over-the-Rim Cleanup

IF YOU WERE NOT A CURRENT MEMBER OF THE AMC AS OF SUNDAY, AUGUST 26, 2018, AND WERE PLANNING TO JOIN OR REJOIN IN ORDER TO ATTEND THIS EVENT, PLEASE CONTACT THE EVENT ORGANIZER AT THE EMAIL ADDRESS BELOW TO SEE IF YOU WILL BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE. It’s time again for the annual Grand Canyon Over-The-Rim Clean-up! For those new to this event, this is the AMC’s 26th year of providing a valuable public service at the Grand Canyon. We have scoured the slopes below Mather Point and spruced up the view from the ice cream store at Bright Angel Lodge. Following the clean-up effort, we can get together for dinner at the campsite where we can end an awesome day with great company. Sunday morning, some of us will head out to clean behind the bus stop west of Bright Angel Trailhead. We look forward to having you with us! The Clean-up is scheduled for Saturday, September 29th and Sunday morning, September 30th. In order to go over the edge or belay someone who is going over the edge, you must be a current AMC member and have participated in one of last year’s skills review sessions, last year’s cleanup event, or one of the skills review sessions this year listed below. Participants must be a minimum of 18 to go over the edge or belay a participant. Participation and area assignment is at the discretion of the event organizer. WAITLIST – When you RSVP, you’ll be asked for your full name, email and phone number, how many years of prior participation. You will initially be assigned to the waitlist. We are using the waitlist function to verify membership and skills review. Individuals who do not respond to the questions when joining the waitlist or do not have current AMC membership may be moved to “Not Going” by the organizer. This year we are asking participants to do 3 things: 1. RSVP via Meetup to include the information requested in the question. 2. Attend one of the rappel/prusik skill review sessions (see corresponding Meetup on 8/25/2018 and 9/8/2018). Contact the event organizer if you have questions about your need to attend. 3. Show up, pick up trash and have a great experience at one of the natural wonders of the world! T-Shirt Orders will be processed separately. Campsites will be available and assigned by the event organizer. No Pets in the campground or at the event. This is not a pet friendly event. Trash Rappel Skills: We are committed to using a specific technique for areas that require rappelling that is consistent with what is now taught in the AMC BORC School. We won’t be teaching any of these techniques on-site at the Canyon. Those who have attended skills review may still help out with other clean-up duties. SKILLS REVIEW SESSIONS Look for separate Meetup for the training sessions below and enroll to participate. Saturday, August 25 Saturday, September 8 Additional information about this event will be provided to registered participants at a later date. Remember: These events are only successful due to the efforts of many VOLUNTEERS. If you have some time that you can devote to helping organize this event, please contact John Furniss (john.v.furniss@gmail.com) at your earliest convenience.
