TRIP DESCRIPTION: This is a technical climb leaving from Lost Dutchman State Park (entrance fee to get in) Apache Junction, AZ, hiking to the Siphon Draw Trail, up a ways, then off-trail for a little “bush-hopping, boulder whacking” scramble up to the start of the climb. Crying Dinosaur is clearly visible from the Siphon Draw Trail and is one of the many pinnacles in the area. This climb is shady, and can be cold and windy. Windbreaker, parka & pants, is a good idea, and more depending on weather. We’ll drop our packs and gear where we’ll rappel down off the climb, then walk/scramble maybe a hundred yards to the start of the climb. I’ve been doing that in my climbing shoes. It’s a memorable 3-pitch climb with exposure, and a “5.7” start. Once on top (again, can be cold and windy) we’ll rappel about 50’ then about 170’ back down to our packs.

Safety is our #1 goal. It is everyone’s job.

TO ATTEND THIS EVENT:

1. Priority is given to graduates of the most recent AMC Basic Rock-climbing Class. You must be a paid-up member of AMC.
2. DO A REALISTIC SELF-ASSESSMENT ABOUT WHETHER YOU SHOULD COME ON THIS TRIP. It is not for new climbers. Have some “5.7-5.8” climbing experience and be competent at rappelling, locking off your rappel device, and ascending rope to self-rescue.
2. Have the required gear (see below) and help carry and manage group gear/rope,
3. Put yourself on the “Wait-List”,
4. I will screen the wait list.
PLEASE DO NOT PUT YOURSELF ON THE WAITLIST UNLESS YOU ARE FIRMLY COMMITTED TO ATTENDING. SIGNING UP AND THEN BAILING, COULD AFFECT YOUR ABILITY TO GET ON FUTURE TRIPS.

REQUIRED GEAR (Minimum):
Harness, helmet, climbing shoes, approach shoes, belay/rappel device(s), 3 (minimum) locking biners, 3 (minimum) non-locking biners or just 6 lockers, personal anchor, headlamp (test it), autoblock, 20 feet of one-inch tubular webbing, or cordellete, 3 prussiks (short medium, long) for self-rescue (or other ascension devices), a rap-ring (bail-out ring) A PACK THAT IS BIG ENOUGH TO CARRY ROPE, SO YOU APPROACH/EXIT HANDS-FREE, food & water for a full day. I’ll be bringing a small (maybe 18 L.) pack for the climb with wind-suit, food, water, headlamp, etc.

Climbing is a team effort. Be looking for what you can do to help out. You will be carrying a rope or other group gear.

Think about whether you need:
gloves for belay +/or rappel, Breathable Rain-suit, chalk bag, glasses strap, sun protection, hat/scarf, sunscreen, first-aid supplies, electrolytes, meds, small pocket knife, camera, positive attitude.

If the above language is not understood, talk to me before you sign up.
It may very well be more windy and cold than you think. One layer on your legs can leave you miserable all day.

“Prepare for the unexpected. Everything will not always go just as you wish.” David A.
